Back on Saturday 8 June, two members of the Steelers’ Under 17 programme took part in the first round of NFL Academy trials. Over 1500, 16 to 18-year olds registered their interest to be apart of the NFL’s first cohort of UK academy players.

Following the first round, 150 of the best athletes were selected to take part in the second round this past Tuesday 2 July. Here they would get the chance to be amongst the first British American Football players to walk out onto Tottenham Hotspurs’ new American Football pitch. At the second round of trails players competed for eighty places and the opportunity to enrol on the NFL Academy in September 2019.

Jayon Mais (WR/RB/CB) and Dante Barnett (NT/LB/RB) both took part in the first round of trails and both were successfully offered places to attend the second round of trails! Only the best athletes were selected for the second round and these two players were a credit to themselves and the Sandwell Steelers for the way that they have conducted themselves.

This opportunity has not just given the lads the opportunity to compete for a once in a lifetime opportunity, but they have already been able to meet several their idols such as Odell Beckham Jr and JuJu Smith-Schuster through the Academy trial process.

The Sandwell Steelers are committed to player development through all of their teams and if players express an interest or show the desire to play the sport at a higher level the Steelers coaching staff will do everything to ensure that they are supported throughout their footballing journey.

Following the latest camp for the National programme, FOUR members of the #SteelerFamilia have been selected by Head Coach Jim Messenger for the 2019 Women’s IFAF European Championship finals, to be held 12-17 August.

Huge congratulations to Libby Davoren, Amber Norbury and Victoria Ware from the Steelers’ Womens programme, along with Sydney Green of the Flag programme, who have all been selected to represent their country! #RoarForGB

Congratulations to Adult contact player and #LegionOfSwag member Paul Zinkus on being called up to the GB Silver Lions Flag squad! We’ll have a chat with him about flagging in Aylesbury, and not with the newly established Steelers Flag programme…
